He leído por algún sitio que ayer, 14 de Abril, había sido el 60 cumpleaños de Ritchie Blackmore el mítico guitarrista de la no menos mítica banda de rock Deep Purple. Y me ha venido a la mente la historia de cómo tuvieron la idea para crear su canción más conocida, aquella con el riff de guitarra más famoso del mundo, “Smoke on the Water” (aunque bueno fijándose uno en la letra esta todo más o menos explicado).
Resulta que el grupo había decidido grabar el álbum “Machina Head” de tal manera que aunque fuese un disco en estudio tuviera todos los condicionantes de un directo. Para ello, se habían desplazado hasta Montreux (Suiza) situado a la orilla del lago Ginebra y habían escogido el Casino de la localidad para llevar a cabo su trabajo. Frank Zappa tocaba en el mismo sitio el día antes y los Deep Purple fueron invitados al evento. Como no querían mezclar su material con el de Zappa, los encargados del transporte decidieron descargarlo al día siguiente, lo que resultó ser una decisión más que acertada…
En plena actuación de Zappa y su grupo (los Mothers of Invention), de repente, se declaró un incendio. En pocos minutos aquello fue un infierno aunque milagrosamente no hubo victimas. El incendio duró bastantes horas y toda la zona estaba llena de humo incluido el lago Ginebra antes citado… de allí la idea del humo en el agua (smoke on the water); este título tan peculiar no fue producto de ningún cerebro afectado por algún tipo de sustancia más o menos prohibida como algunos podrían pensar…
